Purpose:

Many illegal and unethical actions at work are done by professionals who think they are good and want to do the right thing. This workshop links research and knowledge to practice assisting accountants to understand what influences work and professional ethical behavior and how we can improve our capacity for ethical thought and action.

The workshop will address issues such as:

  • How can we identify and overcome ethical blind-spots that make good people behave badly?
  • How can we facilitate good decisions from our good people?
  • How do our biases influence our moral behaviour and what can we do to address that influence?
  • How do conflicts of interest affect what we do and why? How can we deal with them?
  • How do social and organisational pressures work?  What can we do to create a work environment that helps people behave ethically? How do we nourish an ethical culture through leadership?
  • How does the Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants help accountants act ethically?  What does it require accountants to do in terms of their own behaviour but also that of their employers and clients?
  • How can accountants improve the morality of the marketplace?
